Boulby and the Boulby Mine

The northern end of the Yorkshire Coast is industrialised, with alum quarries and potash mines scarring the line of a nevertheless spectacular coastline.

Lying just inland at Boulby is the Boulby Mine, one of the deepest underground mines in Europe, and now site of the UK Dark Matter Collaboration particle physics experiment, which attempts to discover postulated and otherwise elusive particles known as "WIMPs" (Weakly Interactive Massive Particles) or "neutralinos".

For more information about the subject of particle physics, please visit the Eagle Intermedia particle physics website.
