The Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Whitby won Gold in Visit England's Awards for Excellence Competition 2013 at the national awards ceremony in Manchester. The Museum won gold in the small visitor attraction category against competition from all over the country.
Asked to comment on the success, Sophie Forgan, Chairman of Trustees said: "After last year's White Rose Awards we could say we were one of Yorkshire's best. Now we can say we are one of Britain's best!"
The award is the culmination of 25 years work by never less than 50 members of the Whitby community, most of them volunteers giving their time freely.
